Classroom Law Project was founded on the belief that the way to preserve democracy is to teach democracy. And the best way to teach democracy is to incorporate the lessons and principles of democracy into the school curriculum. CLP promotes understanding of the law, democracy, and the role of the citizen.

  Thomas Jefferson

For nearly a quarter of a century, our message has always been the same: more. More civics education, more active citizenship, more understanding, more teaching of the skills and responsibilities of democracy in our schools. Starting in the classroom, starting in first grade, continuing through high school and, well, never really stopping. When it comes to the exercise and preservation of democracy, we’re big fans of the lifelong learner.

Classroom Law Project is concerned with things close to home. We’reall about exporting democracy to, for example, Portland fifth-graders. Or Medford 10th- graders. Or Wallowa ninth-graders. Any kid, any teacher, any classroom we can reach, as a matter of fact. Because democracy isn’t genetic, it isn’t a given and it isn’t guaranteed. Use it or lose it — you know it’s true.

While teachers at all grade levels benefit from learning about the law, civics and government, budget cutbacks frequently result in loss of curriculum specialists. Classroom Law Project can fill the gap.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform them of their discretion." ~ Thomas Jefferson
