Congratulations on your democracy. With proper care and maintenance it will give you centuries of vital service and continue to produce valuable byproducts, including freedom, opportunity and hope.

For 2008-2009, Classroom Law Project provided support, training and maintenance programs for your democracy in unique ways to hundreds of students and dozens of schools around Oregon. Just a few examples:

Some 60 very engaged fifth-graders at Chief Joseph Elementary School in Portland learned all about the U.S. Constitution, then took part in impressive simulated hearings at the State Capitol to demonstrate their knowledge.

Interactive and inspiring We the People and Project Citizen textbooks and lesson plans were provided to nearly 400 teachers statewide.

Dozens of teachers from around Oregon discovered innovative ways to teach civics and government at CLP’s Summer Institute.

In concert with the Oregon Legislature, CLP expanded civic education in our state by offering two-day best-practices workshops. A record 144 teachers participated.

Nearly 5,000 Oregon students in grades 5-12 took part in CLP’s Courthouse Experience program, enjoying an authentic opportunity to learn about the justice system by observing real courts and cases.

CLP helped sponsor the first-ever mock-trial showcase for high-school students in Croatia. Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul DeMuniz joined us to judge one of the trials. There is much we here in the U.S. can learn from this rapidly changing country’s hunger for democracy.

The list goes on — and you can learn and experience more by clicking here. We urge you to consult your Democracy Owner’s Manual frequently, and to observe all care and maintenance intervals for best performance and durability.
