High School

     

 We the People...the Citizen & the Constitution

 October 2007 / January 2008

Approximately 3,500 students from 5th and 8th grades and high school in a curriculum on the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Featured activity is simulated congressional hearings with students grilled on constitutional issues. Competitive event for high schoolers, noncompetitive for 5th and 8th graders.

Free classroom sets of We the People books are distributed to interested teachers for all three grade levels.

 Mock Trial Competition

 

 March 2008

More than 90 teams involving 1,500 students in 9 regional competitions from Pendleton to Medford. High school teams compete at regional, state and national levels. Students learn about how trials work and what lawyers, judges and jurors do.

 Law Day

 

 May 2008

750 high school students from Oregon and SW Washington. Conference format with 18 workshops on issues such as Military Enlistment, Date Rape, Gangs, Forensics, Sexual Harassment, Immigration, and Global Warming. Speakers include local activists, judges, attorneys, medical examiner and other experts.

 Youth Summit

 

Middle & high-school students from 30 classes participate in an annual Summit on a legal or election issue. Professional development workshops are provided to teachers to help them prepare students for the Summit. Students meet with experts and share their findings with classmates, parents and teachers.

 

 Street Law

 

 Ongoing

In operation since 1979, its 500+ lawyer-alums now include partners, judges and other community leaders. Law students from Northwestern School of Law teach practical law in local high schools, coordinating with the classroom teacher. Topics such as juvenile justice, consumer and family law are included.

   

 CIVITAS

   

International partnership with Croatia along with Maryland and Delaware funded by the Center for Civic Education and the U.S. Department of Education. Furthers democracy education in schools. Project Citizen curriculum is a focal point.

Grade School and Middle School

     

 Project Citizen Showcase and We the People Days

 May 21-22, 2008

For 5th through 8th graders. Classes present We the People simulated hearings to a panel of civic leaders on Wednesday, May 21. Optional Project Citizen hearing on Thursday, May 22. Project Citizen portfolios will be on display in the Gus Solomon Courthouse lobby from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

 Project Citizen (middle school)

 

Approximately 300 middle school students. The curriculum involves identifying a public policy issue and developing an action plan for local government leaders to use in addressing the issue. The class puts together a portfolio that can be submitted to a state competition.

   

 Courthouse Experience Program (grades 5 - 12)

 

 October 2007 - June 2008

4,000+ students from 5th to 12th grade from area public and private schools. Students see arraignments at the Justice Center and trials at the Multnomah County Courthouse and often have the opportunity to speak with judges. Volunteer tour guides range from college students to retirees, paralegals and lawyers.

Resources for Teachers and Attorneys

     

 Summer Institute

 July 7-11, 2008

30+ elementary, middle and high-school teachers Weeklong professional development seminar that trains teachers to use the We the People…the Citizen and the Constitution program with their students. Institute participants will focus on understanding the U.S. Constitution and America's role in shaping new democracies.

On statewide in-Service and other days, CLP brings information to teachers on our programs: We the People, Project Citizen, Street Law, Mock Trial and Youth Summits.

   

 Consultations
